Renew Our Rivers – photo of cleanup

Weiss Lake Improvement Association has participated in the Alabama Power Program “Renew Our Rivers” for the past 5 years.  This program is supported in Alabama by 10 lake associations and focuses on picking up and removing trash from Alabama Power lakes.  Over this period volunteers have picked up 255,000 pounds of trash from Weiss Lake.  Weiss Lake Improvement Association under the leadership of our Renew Our Rivers Chairman, Shad Ellis, 1,140 volunteers and sponsors were recruited.  With the cooperation on Brian Johnson and the Cherokee County School board 23 teachers and approximately 800 students representing all Cherokee County Schools participated.  In 2005 the total poundage of trash removed from the lake was 54,000 pounds.  Weiss Lake Improvement Association promotes the Alabama Power program “Pack It In, Pack It Out” and reminds all citizens and visitors to place all litter in an appropriate trash receptacle and not throw it in the lake or on road sides.  Let’s all do our part to keep Weiss Lake and Cherokee County clean and litter free.
